Description
Where the cobalt blue jug in this pair speaks in a single, commanding voice, this companion piece is a full conversation — a riot of hand-painted colour that manages, despite its exuberance, to hold together as a beautifully resolved composition. The palette is warm and complex: amber and ochre blossoms with teal-blue centres, rust-red petals, olive and lime green foliage, all rendered in a free, confident brushwork style against a white ground. A dark brown manganese band sweeps across the upper body beneath the spout, providing a grounding note that prevents the colour from floating free. The base is banded in gold, and the scrolled handle — a characteristic Béquet form — is gilded to match.
The decorative vocabulary draws on the long European tradition of exotic floral ornament that runs from 17th-century Delft through to Italian maiolica and the polychrome earthenwares of Central and Eastern Europe — which is presumably the association the original vendor had in mind when noting, with a smile, that it has something of the Russian decorative tradition about it. That cross-cultural quality is part of what makes it so liveable: it reads comfortably in a variety of interior contexts, from the maximalist to the quietly eclectic.
The white ground is marked on the handle with what appears to be a small silver paper label or mark — likely a retailer’s or export sticker — which may yield further information about the original point of sale if examined closely.
