Description
A handsome and substantial piece of 19th-century furniture, this chest of drawers is constructed entirely from solid birch — a timber characteristic of cabinetmaking traditions in Russia, the Baltic states, and Northern Europe, where birch forests provided an abundant and beautifully grained alternative to the walnut and mahogany favoured in Western European workshops. The figure of the wood is immediately striking: the drawer fronts display the natural variation in tone and grain that makes solid birch so rewarding when properly finished, ranging from pale honey to deep warm brown in a pattern that no two pieces share.
The form is disciplined and architectural. The upper section is crowned by a flat cornice moulding — described by the vendor as a mavzolei, the Russian term for this type of projecting pediment shelf — which is characteristic of the Empire and late Neoclassical taste that dominated European furniture design from approximately 1800 through to the mid-century. The chest stands on bracket feet, a practical and visually grounding choice that reinforces the piece’s solid, rectilinear character. The overall proportion — nearly square in its front elevation — gives it a presence that works equally well as a bedroom chest, a hallway piece, or a statement object in a study or sitting room.
Five drawers are arranged in the classic 2-over-3 configuration: two shorter drawers at the top, three graduating full-width drawers below. All five run smoothly. The original oval escutcheon plates — small, elegantly shaped keyhole surrounds typical of the period — have been retained, and each has been fitted with a slender drop handle, a sympathetic addition that maintains the period character while making the drawers comfortable to use.
The chest has been professionally restored and treated throughout with Borma oil and wax finish, a high-quality Italian product widely used in the conservation of antique furniture. The result is a surface that is protected, stable, and deeply warm in tone without appearing over-polished or artificially brightened. The cornice shelf and all five drawers are removable, making transport and installation considerably more manageable despite the piece’s substantial weight.
