Description

Pairs are always the prize. A single antique sconce is a decorative object; a matched pair is a room-making decision, and good pairs of antique brass wall lights in the Rococo manner are consistently among the most sought-after items in the vintage lighting market — sought by interior designers furnishing period rooms, by collectors of French and Italian decorative arts, and by anyone who has ever tried to match two antique sconces and discovered how difficult that is in practice. This pair is matched, original, and in working order.

The backplate of each sconce is cast as a tall, sinuous cartouche in the Louis XV manner — a form derived from the asymmetric Rococo designs that dominated French and Italian decorative arts in the 18th century and were revived with sustained enthusiasm throughout the 19th and into the 20th. The cartouche sweeps upward from a scrolled foot through a fluid S-curve, the surface enriched throughout with acanthus leaf mouldings, shell forms, and finely chased linear detail that catches the light along every edge. The casting is crisp and confident — the work of a foundry that knew its models well.

From the upper section of each backplate, two candle arms extend outward and upward in a gentle asymmetric spread, each arm following its own Rococo curve and terminating in a flower-form drip pan and candle cup. The arms are decorated to match the backplate — acanthus leaves at the joints, fluted detail along the arms — so that the whole reads as a unified composition rather than a body with attachments.

The patina is a deep, even bronze-brown, darker in the recesses and warming to antique gold at the high points of the relief. This is the natural result of age and use, and it is precisely the tone that designers and collectors seek: not the raw brightness of new brass, not the green of neglected metal, but the settled warmth of a piece that has lived in good rooms for several decades.

Both sconces are fitted with E14 LED candle bulbs and are in wired working order. As with all vintage electrical fittings, buyers should have the wiring inspected by a qualified electrician prior to installation.
