The backplate of each sconce is cast as a tall, sinuous cartouche in the Louis XV manner — a form derived from the asymmetric Rococo designs that dominated French and Italian decorative arts in the 18th century and were revived with sustained enthusiasm throughout the 19th and into the 20th. The cartouche sweeps upward from a scrolled foot through a fluid S-curve, the surface enriched throughout with acanthus leaf mouldings, shell forms, and finely chased linear detail that catches the light along every edge. The casting is crisp and confident — the work of a foundry that knew its models well.

From the upper section of each backplate, two candle arms extend outward and upward in a gentle asymmetric spread, each arm following its own Rococo curve and terminating in a flower-form drip pan and candle cup.
